The team of archaeologists working on the Pampa La Cruz archaeological zone, located in Trujillo (Peru), has located since 2018 the remains of at least 227 children who have been sacrificed in three different rituals of the Chimú culture, supposedly in the 13th, 15th and 16th centuries.

The director of Huanchaco archaeological project, Gabriel Prieto Burmester, has reported that the investigations carried out so far in the excavation, located in the Trujillo district of Huanchaco, have determined there were at least three sacrificial ceremonies in that area, according to the Peruvian agency Andina.

The expert has confirmed the finding of the skeletal remains of 95 children between the ages of six and 15 and that, added to the 132 found in 2018, bringing the total number of bodies located to 227. All of them correspond to ceremonies of offering or celebration, as it is extracted from the superposition of the bodies, the form of burial and the artifacts located next to the bones, among other indications.

"It is a possibility that these sacrifices have been to promote good battles or commemorate triumphs," said the archaeologist, who tries to determine together with his team the reasons why the Chimú sacrificed children and the moment in which these ceremonies began. The first of them would have taken place between 1200 and 1250, the second between 1400 and 1450 and the third between 1500 and 1520.

“Children are the most precious asset of society, as they represent the future of it. However, what we want to know is what changed in the Chimú in order to start sacrificing them; because the Moche sacrificed adults, but not minors ”, he stated.
